Chelation Therapy: Treatment for Heavy Metals Intoxication

Human exposure to heavy metals has risen dramatically in the last 50 years. Lead, mercury and cadmium are prime examples of such “toxic metals.”  Exposure to metals may occur through diet, medications, the environment, or in the course of work or play. If unrecognized or not treated, heavy metal toxicity can result in significant illness.

Experiencing Symptoms of Heavy Metals Toxicity?

Heavy metals such as lead, aluminum, cadmium, or mercury are considered neurotoxins. They can cause brain fog, fatigue, eczema, skin rash, hair loss, constipation, bloating, anxiety, depression and high blood pressure. Some patients may also be exposed to mercury through amalgam dental fillings. Getting a correct diagnosis is the first step in detoxifying heavy metals out of your system.

Heavy Metals Toxicity Testing is done by a 24 hr Urine collection test.

Chelation Therapy. How does it work?

Chelation (key-lay-shon) therapy is started after confirmation and levels of Metals Toxicity with Baseline Urine test. It works by administering a compound, Calcium Disodium (EDTA) that bind to heavy metals and safely remove them from the body through the urine.  EDTA is a popular modality for the removal of toxic metals, especially for lead from the body. The FDA approves EDTA for the treatment of heavy metal toxicity.  It can be used IV or in less invasive form as suppositories. My office prefers suppositories, since is safer, noninvasive and with better control over unpleasant side effects.

EDTA works by forming multiple chemical bonds to a metal ion. Think of it as a claw machine that kids play in arcades. The claw (the chelating agent) picks up a stuffed animal (the metal ion).

Is Chelation Therapy NEW? No. Chelation therapy has been in use since the 1940s to treat poison gas exposure and nowadays it is safely used in children to treat them for lead exposure.

Dr Aguero’s Recommendation:

1) Have a Baseline (Before) Urine test (24h collection) to see if you have high levels of toxicity

2) If Toxicity is present, you must start chelation therapy with EDTA suppositories with dose escalation for at least 3 months.

3) At month #4, repeat (After) follows up the Urine test to see if therapy was successful by removing Heavy metals and to return Metal levels to safe values.
